It’s mid-morning in the peak of summer, with not a breath of wind across the bay, conditions resembling a lake more than an ocean. I knew it was the perfect opportunity to bring out the mega dome, a device fitted to the front of an underwater housing to create split shots, or over-unders, allowing the camera to capture both worlds above and below the surface. I noticed a green turtle resting beside a rock on the seafloor. Unable to dive down with such a setup, I waited patiently, bobbing on the surface, taking in the pristine conditions. Knowing turtles can hold their breath for up to seven hours when resting, it was going to require some patience. Eventually I noticed it began its ascent. After allowing it time on the surface to take a series of breaths and accept my presence, it slowly drifted closer. In that final moment, as it took one last breath, I managed to captured a few quick images before it slipped below the surface, returning to its resting place for the remainder of the day. Demonstrating that patience and calmness on the animals terms always present the best encounters.
