“Before Landfall” by Josh Bystrom
Cyclone Alfred gave us 8-10 foot surf for 3 days straight and unfortunately destroyed our coastline in the process. This was taken at Bilinga a few hours before the whole coast went into lockdown and the Cyclone historically made landfall the following morning. There were 50 knot winds, torrential rain squalls where you couldn't see your hand in front of your face and then the sun would only pop out for a few minutes. I was lucky enough to take this shot during one of those moments. I had a feeling when Van Whiteman caught that wave something special had just happened. He looked so comfortable in the barrel amongst all the chaos with his arms wide open. When I arrived home I was delighted to the that the shot had turned out!
