“Framed Falls” by Josh Mallet

Composite of multiple exposures to focus stack and maximise shadow detail while preserving highlights. A specific exposure was taken for the waterfall at 1/4 of a second to capture the water movement without losing all texture detail.
 
This is a waterfall in the Gold Coast hinterland which only appears briefly following heavy rainfall. I was obviously interested by the abstract shape of the root system of the tree that frames the waterfall and then extends through the foreground. Composing this shot required trialling a variety of focal lengths and tripod positions to capture both the sweeping curves of the foreground roots while also placing the waterfall in the archway formed by the root buttresses in the midground.
