“The Breacher” by Clay Harris
The Breacher “Each year, between the months of May and November, humpback whales migrate north from their feeding grounds in Antarctica along Australia’s east coast, travelling thousands of kilometres to warmer waters, where they can give birth and nurse their young. On a calm, windless day off the Gold Coast, a smoggy haze from some back-burning forest fires blanketed the coast softening the harsh midday sun. After spotting some activity in the distance we waited quietly with our cameras at the ready. A curious juvenile surfaced beside the boat, breaking the stillness. Shortly after the ocean exploded, as this fully grown humpback whale lunged from the depths, towering above us in the most breathtaking display of power by an animal. As our captain Dave lets out a long, triumphant ‘Yeaaaap!’ the unmistakable signal that something extraordinary had just happened.
